Philosophy
The artist's best model is herself. She is there when the artist is and is ready when the artist is. For thousands of years artists have done self-portraits. Self-portraits give students the opportunity to use the same model repeatedly to compare their progress. Self-portraits also give the students an opportunity to express their culture or a part of themselves that people might not see.

Goals

· Students practice facial feature- eye, mouth, ear, nose, skull
· Students look at the work of Margo Machida, Frida Kahlo, and Jesse Cooday
· Student draw an Inside, Outside self portrait
· Students draw a model- gesture drawings and contour
· Students look at the work of Rembrandt and Vermeer

Discovering Drawing- Face Front View

Objectives

Perceptions: Students will become aware that all faces have similarities and the same proportions and that it is the subtle differences that make each individual look different.

Arts Heritage: Students will look at work by Rembrandt, Van Gough, and Whistler for their use of lights and darks in portraiture and Margo Machida, Frida Kahlo, and Jesse Cooday for their use of a self-portrait as a way to show more of themselves to the viewer than just their features.

Aesthetic Valuing: Students will understand how to make their self-portrait look like them and not a generic face.

Creative Expression: Students will express themselves and how they perceive themselves in their self-portraits.
