In this class we will explore the phenomenon of how light interacts with
photographic paper by making a pinhole camera. Then we will learn proper
darkroom etiquette and develop the paper. After that we will investigate
the workings of the camera and compare it to the human eye. We will take
a variety of pictures experimenting with different shutter speeds and
apertures. We will learn how to develop the film and enlarge a print.
Finally we will complete numerous photography assignments exploring different
themes and techniques
Absences
Students are responsible for work missed while absent. The student may
only make-up work and/or quizzes with and excused absence note. There
will be an assignment sheet posted in the room and students will need
to check the list when s/he returns and complete the missed assignment
as homework.
Grading
Each student will need a three ring binder with four sections: notes,
photo log, quizzes, and assignments. Students will also be required to
purchase an archival photograph portfolio. Students are responsible for
keeping all of their work in their portfolio until it is time to fill
out their grade petition. Students will calculate their own grade with
the grade petition. Class assignments, notes, quizzes, and photo log is
worth half of the grade and photo assignments worth the other half. Class
work is daily exercises that are not graded but the student receives credit
for completing them. Photo assignments are projects that take two to three
days to compete and are collected and graded by the teacher. Student's
work will be graded on time, effort, accepting and working with positive
criticism, and following directions. Unfinished work will not be accepted.
Homework
Students will be required to take certain photographs on their own time.
This will require the checking out of photographic equipment, proper handling,
and safe return.
Clean up
Clean up time is the last five minutes of class. When instructed immediately
stop working and safely put away materials. The student's workspace should
be immaculate. When finished the student is to sit in his/her seat until
dismissed. The teacher will dismiss the students, not the bell.
Material Fee
Due to the high cost of photographic paper, film, and chemicals students
are required to pay a $65 material fee each semester. The material fee
covers the archival photograph portfolio, chemicals, two packs of photography
paper, film, and negative sleeves.
