The Teacher as a Role Model

The teacher is forever a student. She is always acquiring knowledge, be it about the world, life, or how to better herself as a professional. The teacher is constantly improving her teaching ability through time and practice. The teacher must be passionate about her subject. Enthusiasm is contagious, soon her students will be engaged in the subject matter. The teacher is in the classroom to facilitate learning; she gives the students materials, some knowledge and instruction, then lets them loose to explore and create meaning on their own. The teacher must guide, instruct, and reach all students to the best of her ability. When she has done all she can she must make the students aware of the resources available to assist them in their endeavor.
The teacher should create an awareness in students of the possibilities and opportunities available to them. Part of the teacher's job is to give students a means of expressing themselves, their ideas, and opinions. This enables them to have their voice heard and gives them acceptable ways of expressing emotions. The teacher must help students develop the ability to think critically. She must help the students foster skills that they can use later in life.
The teacher must help students build self-esteem; not by diluting the curriculum but by believing in them, having high expectations for the students, and praising them for their achievements. Contributing to the students' self-worth is the teacher's awareness of diversity in cultures and learning styles. The teacher must acknowledge that all her students are different and must plan her lessons accordingly.
In addition to these requirements the teacher must not forget that she is a counselor, who should always have her door open to students. She is a mentor, guiding students and teaching them the appropriate way to present themselves to the world. Finally, the teacher is a positive role model for all of her students. She values education and encourages them to do the same.
